Updated: Aug 8, 2019

Natural remedies to soothe and heal common skin conditions in new babies and toddlers.

Skin disorders such as rashes and fungal infections are some of the most common issues that affect new babies and young toddlers.

It is completely normal for your baby to experience these symptoms as their tiny body learns to adapt to a new environment outside of the womb.

Babies have very immature immune systems and are not yet equipped to deal with the environmental and chemical toxins that our adult bodies have learnt to process.

For this reason It can be very dangerous to use topical pharmaceutical medication on your baby's skin unless absolutely necessary. Steroid creams and antibiotics contain harsh ingredients that wipe out the vital good bacteria that your baby is building.

Most of skin conditions that effect young children are uncomfortable but generally not serious and can be cleared up very quickly with these gentle and natural solutions.

Rashes - Eczema, Psoriasis, Nappy Rash, Cradle Cap

Washing powder - Swap to soap nuts

Even Organic Laundry detergents can be harsh and abrasive for the sensitive and developing skin of a new baby. Soap nuts are used widely in India and are a beautiful and natural alternative to clean your clothes. Soap nuts are a type of fruit containing a natural soap called saponin, which is released when they come into contact with water. Completely natural, fragrance and chemical free!

Bath - Organic Oat, Chamomile and Lavender bath soak

This is a beautiful evening ritual to not only soothe irritated skin but to relax and calm your baby and before bedtime.

Ingredients :

- 1/2 cup oats

- 1 Table spoon of Chamomile flowers

- 1 Teaspoon of lavender

Method :

Place herbs into a an old stocking or muslin cloth and place in the bath to soak for 10 minutes.

I like to leave the stocking in the bath and let my daughter suck on it, this way she gets more of the medicine into her system and it makes for a super relaxed and sleepy baby!

Skin - Calendula Oil

Give your baby a gentle massage after their bath with a little Calendula infused oil in the palm of your hands. Calendula is a demulcent herb which means it is used to heal mucous membranes and epithelial tissue. It is also incredibly useful in soothing itchy, irritated skin caused by chicken pox and eczema.

Fungal Infection/Ringworm -

The commercial use of antimicrobial drugs has led to not only a resistance to various strains of antibiotics but also to severe longterm side effects such as allergies and food intolerances.

Immune response in new babies is weak which is why any foreign stressors entering the body, can cause serious damage and lead to longterm digestive and autoimmune issues.

Neem Oil is an organic vegetable seed oil, containing natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It is incredibly bitter and pungent with a very fast acting action on fungal infections.

Simply apply a small amount to the affected area twice per day after bath.

*Neem seed oil should only be used externally unless otherwise prescribed by a qualified herbal practitioner.
